The project team met a guide from the former political prisoners’ organisation, Coiste na n-larchimí, for a tour of Belfast’s Milltown cemetery on 19th January 2017.

The tour guide told the team some of the history of the cemetery and guided them around a number of graves and memorials, detailing the stories of those interred at the cemetery going back many generations. The broad historical scope of this tour combined with the guide’s retelling of stories relating to specific individuals and families provided the team with both macro- and micro-level narratives of Belfast’s past. Memorials erected by a number of non-state armed groups to remember their dead provided valuable insight into the memorialisation of the conflict.
